Keep walking. Keep knocking.

Whenever I’m having a bad day in my business and consider throwing in the towel, I think back to when I first moved to NYC.  I didn't have any connections on Broadway AND I was determined to be a Star Dresser.

For those of you who don’t know what the hire process for this looks like, let me give you a little glimpse:

If you don't have any connections, this is how you apply: You literally knock on the stage door, the doorman takes your resume, and you hope that you labeled it correctly so that it gets to the wardrobe department.. then you hope that when they need someone, your resume happens to be on the top of the pile, OR that everyone on top of you in the pile is unavailable, AND THEN that you're available.. get the picture?

My first day in NYC, I dropped my resume off at 28 different theatres.  It was hot.  I was sweaty.  I couldn't find some of the doors.  I didn't know until later that I went on a day that most of them were closed!  I didn't care.  I kept walking, I kept knocking.

When I didn't hear back from any of them, I didn't get discouraged.  I refined my resume.  I met with people in the industry.  I kept walking.  I kept knocking.  It was raining the next time I went.  I didn't give up.  I kept going until it finally happened.  The stars (and my calendar) aligned and I got hired on Broadway.  I cried tears of gratitude for weeks every night before bed.

I was featured in an article about what I thought made me successful and I told them just this: "Keep walking.  Keep knocking."

These are the words that keep me going! Leave a comment below if you needed this encouragement today.
